Seventy-two GPUs. One satellite. Launching next year.
SpaceX and Nvidia are building StarMind AI1, the first AI data center designed to run in orbit. Elon Musk said Friday, November 6, at the Baron Investment Conference that the first launch could come in the third quarter of 2027 — adding, in his own words, “I’m just guessing here.” The bigger deployments would follow in 2028, with much larger volumes in 2029.
The pitch is simple: sunlight in space never stops, so an orbital data center dodges the power limits strangling data centers on the ground. Each StarMind AI1 satellite would carry a space-optimized Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 rack — 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs. SpaceX asked the FCC in January 2026 for permission to launch up to one million orbital compute satellites.
But this is not a new launch, and it is not a done deal. The partnership was announced in August 2026; the news is the 2027 date being reaffirmed. Experts are skeptical: in a vacuum, heat can only escape by radiation, radiation degrades chips, and one analysis puts orbital compute at three to five times the cost of the same compute on the ground. SpaceX’s own IPO filing concedes it has no operating history in orbital AI, the conditions are untested, and a satellite cannot be repaired or upgraded once launched. As of November 2026, no regulatory approvals and no customer contracts for the orbital system have been confirmed.
The storyline
Hook: Seventy-two GPUs. One satellite. Launching next year.
Context: SpaceX and Nvidia are building StarMind AI1, an AI data center in orbit. Musk said Friday, November 6, at the Baron Investment Conference that the first launch could come in the third quarter of 2027, adding “I’m just guessing here.” The partnership was announced in August 2026, with Nvidia’s Vera Rubin NVL72 (72 Rubin GPUs, 36 Vera CPUs) as the payload. SpaceX asked the FCC in January 2026 for up to one million orbital compute satellites.
Stakes: The pitch is free, endless sunlight dodging terrestrial power limits. The catch: experts are skeptical. Heat can only leave by radiation, radiation degrades chips, and one analysis puts orbital compute at 3 to 5 times the cost of ground. SpaceX’s own IPO filing concedes no prior operating history, untested conditions, and no repair after launch. No regulatory approvals or customer contracts were confirmed as of November 2026.
Payoff: So: a data center in space, maybe. A test launch first, not a fleet. Watch for a real customer contract. Follow for one AI story a day.

How we verified this
Sources checked: Interesting Engineering (Nov 6–7 report on the Baron conference and Q3 2027 target), Crypto Briefing (Nov 6, Ron Baron’s CNBC interview and the no-approvals/no-contracts status), Tesla North and BitcoinVersus.Tech (Nov 6 Baron conference recap, including Musk’s “I’m just guessing here” qualifier), Nvidia’s Aug 24, 2026 press release (Vera Rubin NVL72 payload), and the Tau Zero analysis of SpaceX’s IPO filing (3–5x cost estimate; filing concessions). What was checked: the Aug 2026 announcement date (this is a reaffirmed date, not a new launch), the Q3 2027 wording as Musk’s qualified estimate (not a booked launch), the 72-GPU figure, the FCC filing date and 1M-satellite scope, and the skepticism caveats. No original official video of the story exists for reuse — SpaceX’s announcement was a post on X and the Nov 6 remarks were a conference fireside chat; CNBC interview clips are copyrighted news footage, not downloadable. The video is a simple muted build.
