99% cheaper is true — and meaningless.
Anthropic says each background-subagent status update in Claude Code now costs about 99% less. That sounds like your bill just fell off a cliff. It did not. The 99% applies to one tiny job — the status line — not to your session. A whole session with background subagents uses about 5% less of the usage limit, which Anthropic says works out to roughly 6% more prompts.
What happened
On November 4, 2026, Anthropic’s Claude Code team (@ClaudeDevs) posted that a running background subagent updates its status line every 30 seconds, and each update used to re-read the subagent’s whole conversation. Now Haiku 5.5 writes the update from short notes the subagent keeps as it works, so each update costs about 99% less. The change needs Claude Code v2.1.316 or newer, and it is live for most Pro, Max and Ultra users and for all Team and Enterprise accounts. It only affects the terminal (CLI) — the desktop app never wrote this status line.
Why it matters
- Each status update costs about 99% less than before.
- A whole session saves only about 5% of its usage limit — roughly 6% more prompts.
- Your subagent keeps its own model. Only the status line moved to Haiku 5.5.
What it means for you
Update to Claude Code version 2.1.316 or newer. Long sessions that run background agents close to their limit gain the most. If you never run background subagents, nothing changes for you.
The payoff
That 99% is real, yet it barely moves your bill. Send this to the one person who runs Claude Code agents.

How we verified this
Figures come from Anthropic’s own @ClaudeDevs post of November 4, 2026, cross-checked against dev.to, fourweekmba, and independent write-ups of the same announcement. The 99% is per status update only; the 5%-less-limit / 6%-more-prompts session figures are Anthropic’s own, with no published method, so they are reported as Anthropic’s figures, not independently measured. Version 2.1.316 and the CLI-only scope were confirmed in the follow-up thread (Lydia Hallie, Claude Code developer relations). No original demo video of this change exists — the announcement was a text post — so this edition uses a simple muted build.
