CrowdStrike reports that the China-linked hacker group VAPOR PANDA used the ARTEX AI agent framework — run mainly on DeepSeek — to target more than 200 organizations in at least 14 countries over 11 days starting October 17, 2026. Nine organizations suffered confirmed post-exploitation breaches, where attackers planted the BLOODALCHEMY backdoor and moved on to credential spraying, network scanning, and reconnaissance. In a single intrusion, the AI planning agents consumed roughly 1.4 billion input tokens. CrowdStrike stresses this campaign is separate from the ARTEX activity other researchers attributed to Storm-0940 — the same framework is now in several attackers’ hands.
Storyline:
- Hook: 200 organizations, one AI operator, 11 days.
- Context: CrowdStrike tracked one AI operator hitting 200 targets in 14 countries from October 17.
- Stakes: Nine targets were breached with a backdoor planted, and the same toolkit now serves several hacking groups.
- Payoff: One operator ran 200 attacks at once. Send this to the person who runs your security.
