Mistral’s Free Trillion-Parameter AI

Mistral released the downloadable open weights of Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, on October 29, 2026. The 1-trillion-parameter model can now be downloaded and run on private servers, outside Mistral’s control. Mistral pitches it at cyber defenders: in its own tests it refused 96.6 percent of malicious cyber requests, yet the company also warns it could help attackers run real attacks — so its stronger penetration-testing version stays restricted to vetted partners.

Hook: One trillion parameters, free to download, built to attack and defend.

Context: Mistral released Large 4’s weights on October 29. The preview came October 6. It runs text and images, with one million tokens of context.

Stakes: Anyone can now download it and run it on their own servers. In Mistral’s own tests, it refused 96.6 percent of malicious cyber requests. Mistral still warns it could help attackers run real attacks.

Payoff: A trillion-parameter defender is now public, for both sides. Comment: would you trust a free AI with your systems?
