Reddit’s Login Wall: Google’s AI Cost It 1M Visits a Week

Reddit says Google’s AI search answers are costing it visitors. On its third-quarter earnings call on October 29, 2026, chief executive Steve Huffman said search referrals fell by more than one million on average each week during October, and the company warned daily users could fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter if the decline continues. Reddit will test a primarily logged-in experience in select markets outside the United States this quarter, ending about twenty years of open browsing, in part to deter data scraping by AI companies.

Storyline:

  • Hook: One million fewer Reddit visits every week.
  • Context: Reddit will first test logged-in-only browsing this quarter outside America.
  • Stakes: Google’s AI answers now answer questions on the results page. Search referrals fell over one million weekly in October. United States daily users fell two percent, to 50.7 million.
  • Payoff: Those million visits did not vanish. They stayed on Google’s answers page. Follow for one AI story a day.
