Voters rejected new data centers in 40 of 41 votes.
Democrats won the House and Senate in the November 3, 2026 midterms — at least 54 Senate seats including two independents who caucus with Democrats, and roughly 255 seats in the House, with the final tally still days away. They also won governorships in Texas, Georgia, and Ohio. The wider market loved it: the Dow closed up 3%, nearly 1,600 points, with the Nasdaq up 1.4% and the S&P 500 up 1.6%. But AI stocks went the other way.
CoreWeave plunged 10% in a single day. Nvidia fell 3%, Broadcom 2%, and memory suppliers Micron and SanDisk each slid more than 7%. Tesla fell 3% and SpaceX 5%. The split tells the story: the market rallied on the prospect of divided government checking tariffs and the Iran war, while the AI trade fell on the prospect of tighter oversight of the data-center buildout. Voters had already spoken locally — they rejected new data-center projects in 40 of 41 ballot measures across the country.
Texas is the sharpest edge. Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa won on a proposed data-center moratorium, and Texas holds about 27% of planned U.S. data-center gigawatts, per Wells Fargo. But her pause is a campaign proposal, not law: she takes office in January 2027 and faces a Republican-led legislature. Elon Musk, who spent at least $474 million backing Republicans — $224 million of it in Texas — saw his companies fall with the AI trade.
The caveats: some races are still projections, no new federal AI law can pass before 2027, and the president keeps the veto. The vote slowed the AI buildout; it did not stop it.
The storyline
Hook: Voters rejected new data centers in 40 of 41 votes.
Context: Democrats won the House and Senate on Tuesday. AI stocks fell while the wider market rallied.
Stakes: CoreWeave plunged 10 percent in one day. Nvidia fell 3 percent. Micron fell more than 7. Texas voters also picked a governor who wants a data-center pause. Her pause is a proposal, not law yet.
Payoff: The vote slowed the AI buildout, not stopped it. Watch the next data-center vote near you — and send this to one person who follows AI stocks.

How we verified this
Election results and seat counts come from Investor’s Business Daily’s live election coverage (at least 54 Senate seats, roughly 255 House seats, final tally pending) and Reuters’ November 4 report on the Democrat sweep. Closing stock moves come from Investopedia’s November 4 markets report (CoreWeave -10%, Nvidia -3%, Broadcom -2%, Micron and SanDisk -7%+, Tesla -3%, SpaceX -5%, Dow +3%) and agree with Dealroom’s day-after calculations (CoreWeave -10%, Nebius -7%, IREN -11%). The 40-of-41 ballot figure comes from Dealroom’s midterm stock analysis. Musk’s $474 million and $224 million Texas figures are reported by Dealroom and Indonesianow/detikINET and agree. The Texas 27% figure is Wells Fargo, per the November 4 morning edition’s sources. Caveats — projections pending, no law before 2027, veto held — are stated in the sources and above.
