Anthropic Finally Paid for the News

The last AI lab that refused to pay for news just paid.

Anthropic signed its first paid news licensing deal, with the Associated Press, just before the US midterm elections. On election night, Claude users who asked for polling updates got up-to-the-minute information, provided by and attributed to the AP. Neither company has commented on the record, and neither disclosed the financial terms, the timeframe, or whether the deal extends beyond election coverage.

The deal ends a two-year standoff. In August 2026, Anthropic told digital publishers it had no licensing plans, arguing fair use covered its use of publisher content. OpenAI already holds more than a dozen publisher agreements, and Google said in October that more than 400 publications participate in its licensing program. The AP was the first publisher to license content to both Google and OpenAI — it is now the only publisher with paid licensing agreements across all three leading AI platforms.

The storyline

  • Hook: The last AI lab that refused to pay for news just paid.
  • Context: Anthropic signed its first paid news licensing deal, with the Associated Press, just before the US midterms. On election night, Claude showed live AP results, credited to the AP.
  • Stakes: In August, Anthropic said fair use covered scraping and it had no licensing plans. OpenAI already holds over a dozen publisher deals and Google counts more than 400 publishers — the AP is now the only publisher paid by all three leading AI labs.
  • Payoff: The last holdout paid. Expect Claude to cite real sources — and send this to someone who trusts AI answers blindly.

How we verified this

Adweek reported the deal on November 4, 2026, citing two people familiar with the matter; AI Weekly and The Verge corroborated the reporting, including the August fair-use stance, the undisclosed terms, and the AP’s deals with OpenAI (July 2023) and Google (February 2024). No announcement appears on Anthropic’s or the AP’s own pages, and neither company commented on the record.
