Your Website Can Now Opt Out of AI Training

OpenAI announced on October 30, 2026 that it will honor a shared signal in robots.txt — the file websites use to state how their content may be used — so website owners can communicate one AI-training preference to multiple participating providers at once, instead of writing separate rules for every crawler. Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic joined the same shared-signal announcement. OpenAI says it aims to implement the signal in the coming months, and its existing robots.txt controls will keep applying.

Hook: One line can now tell AI companies: don’t train on this.

Context: OpenAI announced a shared training signal in robots.txt on October 30. Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic joined the same shared signal announcement.

Stakes: Before, website owners wrote separate rules for every single crawler. Now one preference reaches every participating provider at the same time.

Payoff: If you run a site, add it once, not per company. Expect OpenAI to roll it out over the coming months. One line, one choice, heard by every participating provider.
