Google announced new school controls on November 3, 2026. Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search switch off by default for K-12 student accounts until administrators turn each one on, starting in early 2027. Schools can switch Gemini off alone, but Search still carries AI inside it — there is no AI-free Search option. Students without Search see a notice saying their school made it unavailable. Schools that allow AI choose between standard Search with AI Overviews and AI chats, or Guided Learning, which walks students through homework step by step.
