400 harmless-looking apps hid a secret switch.
WIRED’s November 2 investigation, built on research by the nonprofit AI Forensics and cybersecurity firm Infoblox, traced a network of more than 400 linked apps and websites that posed as ordinary tools — pet-photo editors, language tutors, and workout coaches. Reviewers saw the harmless version; a remote server could switch on hidden deepfake tools after approval. By September 2026, 27 related apps on Google Play had gathered more than 350,000 downloads combined. Apple removed 19 apps after WIRED shared its findings, including the pet-portrait app Viefur. Meta said it acted on 11,600 ad accounts tied to the operation.
Hook: 400 harmless-looking apps hid a secret switch.
Context: WIRED traced 400 linked apps and domains posing as pet editors, tutors, and coaches.
Stakes: Reviewers saw the harmless version only, a remote server switched on hidden tools later, and Google apps passed 350,000 downloads first.
Payoff: That switch is why stores missed them. Send this to one person who installs apps from ads.
What it means for you: Do not install apps pushed by ads. Check the maker first. Delete and report suspicious apps.
Watch next: Meituan’s LongCat-2.5 — a 1.6-trillion-parameter model with a 1-million-token context window, released November 2.
How we verified this: Facts checked against WIRED’s November 2 investigation as reported by AppleInsider, AI Weekly, and Silicon Report (400+ apps/domains, 19 Apple removals, 350,000+ Google Play downloads, 11,600 Meta ad accounts). No code appears in the source reporting, so no code block is included.
